"MUSCLEMEN"--THE BEAUTIFUL PARASITES. Just as the plant kingdom produces some very lovely plants which gain their succor from host plants to which they attach themselves, so does the human species produce certain very handsome but non-productive men and women who feel their beauty alone entitles them to the full measure of life's blessings with little or no effort on their own part. The genera "muscleman" contains some of the most flagrant examples of this kind of human parasite. At the outset, let us make clear that there are some refreshing exceptions to this appraisal, but they are distressingly rare.
Though they may look exactly alike, there is a clear distinction between a true athlete and a "muscle-man". The typical muscle boy is usually quite lazy. He often resents the effort he must put into his training, but knowing he cannot get muscles by wishing for them or eating protein pills, he labors through the prescribed sets of exercises.. A shocking number of the big muscled fellows refuse to engage in even as mild a sport as swimming for fear of "tearing down" their bulk. They shun labor like the plague, and many employers refuse to give work to an advanced bodybuilder knowing he may tend to "conserve" his strength and energy. Their families often despair of getting them to do the normal chores of the household. When they are kicked out of the home nest, some begin a life of indolence, becoming what is known as d'beach bum". But people often feel sorry for these big beautiful parasites "loan"them money, or give them free lodging. Some have unbelievable gall and no matter how much is done for them, they feel it is not enough. They are worse free-loaders than Washington politicians. Most (whether they admit it publicly or not) feel they should be movie stars though few even take the trouble of getting into little theatre projects, or seriously try to improve themselves-but rather expect to be "discovered" and even if that happens many have proven to lazy to follow through. But after the rose bud has blossomed and some of the petals get a little ragged, the boyish charm has worn away, the muscleman finds himself less in demand, less noticed until soon he is just another slob. In this state he is a pitiful creature if he has completely failed to develop other personality values as so many do. Tragically, some fail to even realize physical change has taken place and they believe themselves to be just as beautiful as ever, but of course the fickle public is looking for new heroes, and the pase has-been finds himself very much alone.
TIPS FOR PHYSIQUE PHOTOGRAPHERS. (This will be a regular feature in each issue of Physique Pictorial. While we lack the time to engage in personal correspondence on this subject questions will be answered through this "column". What do you want to know? SELECTING POSES FOR MODELS. What makes a good pose can often be a very personal matter, and professionals often disagree on this matter. Balance is one of the most important factors (studying an art book on composition may help). To make your task easier, let the model do some notural act such as throwing a ball, lean on a pedestal, lie down and read a book. Unless you are working in stereo, keep him as much as possible in a flat plane paralel with the camera, scrupulously avoid letting his limbs stretch out directly away from the camera (which may make them look distressingly small), and use careful judgment in letting them stretch towards the camera (or they will get quite large), depending of course on the distance of the subject from the camera. It is very important that you remember that the parts of the anatomy closest to the camera will be large while those furtherest away will appear small-hence the importance of keeping the subject on one plane if a normal presentation of his physique is desired. For the most part the subject should look the direction of the action he is performing, though some groups like Western Photography achieve remarkable results by breaking this rule--they are willing to sacrifice logic favor of perfect symmetry of posing. Be inspired by other photographers work but if you try to copy it directly you are doomed for disappointment since every model must work out his own poses and the perfect position for one looks ridiculous when done by another. The best poses are often the relaxed ones which a model
so often unconciously assumes after completing a particular strenuous, even stilted pose, and the photographer should be ready for such occassions and take his model by surprise, before he has an opportunity to destroy his natural position.
